17-Year-Old Wins Gold Amidst Floods

Janmoni Konwar, a 17-year-old karateka from Assam, has won a gold medal at the 2026 All India Independence Cup Karate Championship. This achievement is all the more remarkable given that her home in Bhogdoiporia, Jorhat district, Assam, was swept away by floods in July.

Konwar's family had to flee their bamboo-and-mud house for higher ground, leaving behind their belongings and their training ground. Despite this setback, Konwar was determined to defend her title at the 2026 All India Independence Cup Karate Championship. She received help from Alakh Pandey, a teacher and entrepreneur, who funded her trip to Delhi and assisted her in participating in the championship.

Konwar had previously won a gold medal at the 2025 All India Independence Cup championships in Delhi, and her family had sold buffaloes to fund her trip. She began training in kung-fu at the age of 5 and comes from a family with a sporting background, with her father playing football at the state level and her brother training in karate.
