£1m Fine for United Utilities

United Utilities has been fined nearly £1m for illegally discharging raw sewage into the Lancashire coastline. The company pleaded guilty to five environmental permit offences relating to a pollution incident in June 2023 and was ordered to pay £964,225 in fines and costs by Preston magistrates court.

The pollution incident occurred in June 2023 and lasted for more than 35 hours over several days. Sewage was released from pumping stations at Manchester Square, Anchorsholme, and Chatsworth Avenue, affecting coastal communities in Blackpool, Lytham St Annes, Fleetwood, and Cleveleys.

The Environment Agency issued 'no bathing' advice for all eight designated bathing waters along the affected coastline. The incident had significant consequences for local businesses and communities, with summer visitor numbers in Blackpool falling by hundreds of thousands compared to the previous year.

Three shellfish beds were temporarily closed due to concerns about public health. The incident began after the partial collapse of a final effluent pipe at Fleetwood wastewater treatment works, which reduced the amount of sewage the site could receive, causing wastewater to back up through the network.
