Onions to be sold at ₹35/kg in 21 districts to tame soaring prices
A goods train carrying 850 tonnes of onions from Nashik arrived at the Korukkupet Railway Goods Shed on Monday, as part of the Tamil Nadu government's efforts to reduce onion prices in the state.
The onions will be distributed to 21 districts in the state, with Chennai and Tiruchi each receiving 75 tonnes, and Coimbatore receiving 100 tonnes.
The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) obtained the A-grade onions under instructions from the Government of India, utilizing the price stabilisation fund.
The onions are likely to be sold at ₹35 per kg via fair price shops, in an effort to reduce the price of onions in the open market.
