The Indian Air Force has successfully tested the indigenous Khagantak-243 long-range glide bomb, which can hit targets up to 180 km and carries a 125 kg explosive warhead. The test marks a significant milestone in reducing India's dependence on imported precision munitions.
The Khagantak-243 glide bomb was developed by Nagpur-based JSR Dynamics with Bharat Electronics. It has a glide ratio of more than 12 and can cover a range of 144 km to 180 km when released from an altitude of 12 km at Mach 0.8. The bomb features swivel-type mid-body glide wings and five aft control surfaces.
The IAF first tested the Khagantak-243 from the Su-30MKI and has already placed a limited series contract with Bharat Electronics for the production of the bomb. More than 1,000 Khagantak units are projected to enter IAF service by 2026. The programme could reduce India's import dependency from more than 70% to under 20%.
