Joby Aviation Buys Resonant Sciences for $500M
The acquisition will expand Joby's presence in the defense sector and add $100 million in annual revenue from Resonant Sciences

Joby Aviation is acquiring Resonant Sciences, a defense technology company, for $500 million. The deal, which is expected to close in the first half of 2027, will see Resonant Sciences become Joby's dedicated defense business unit.
The acquisition will be funded with $450 million in cash and $50 million in Joby common stock. Resonant Sciences has generated more than $100 million in trailing 12-month revenue and has grown its revenue by roughly 40% year-over-year.
The acquisition will add about 1 million square feet of manufacturing and testing space in the Dayton region, where Resonant Sciences is based. Resonant Sciences operates at adjusted EBITDA margins in the high teens, making it a profitable business for Joby to acquire.
Joby Aviation has approximately $2.3 billion in cash and short-term investments, which will help fund the acquisition. The company burned through $318 million in operating cash during the first half of 2026, but the acquisition of Resonant Sciences is expected to help expand its presence in the defense sector.
## What it means The acquisition of Resonant Sciences is a significant move for Joby Aviation, which is best known for developing electric air taxis. The company has been pursuing defense contracts and this acquisition will help it scale its business in the growing defense market. Electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) companies like Joby are focusing more on the military market as commercial development has taken longer than expected and defense spending has ramped up.
The acquisition will allow Joby Aviation to focus on certifying, manufacturing, and launching its electric air taxi, while Resonant Sciences will handle the company's defense projects, including the development of a turbine-electric and hydrogen-electric aircraft, and autonomy technology stack. The deal is expected to give the combined company a strong presence in the defense sector and help Joby Aviation expand its business in new markets.
