Geologist, a member of the experimental band Animal Collective, has announced a new album called The Sirens, which was recorded using the power of the moon and a telescope at Farrington Observatory in Joshua Tree. The album is set to be released on October 16 on Outside Time.

The unique recording process involved using a telescope fitted with optical sensors and light-sensitive detectors called photodiodes to collect light from the moon and convert it into an electrical signal. This signal was then sent to Geologist's modular synthesizer rig as control voltage, which modulated pitch, filter, rhythm, and other sonic elements in real time.

Geologist and Kyle Simon, the founder of Farrington Observatory, started their project The Sirens as a recurring performance piece and sound installation in 2018. The album The Sirens was recorded live in 2024, and it marks Geologist's third album of 2026, following Can I Get a Pack of Camel Lights? and Croz Boyce.

The Sirens is not just a new album, but also a culmination of Geologist's experimentation with sound and technology. The use of the moon's power to create music is a testament to the artist's innovative approach to music production. With The Sirens, Geologist is pushing the boundaries of what is possible in music, and the result is an album that is both unique and captivating.

## What's Next Geologist will kick off a tour with Avey Tare next month, starting with a September 8 show in Asheville, North Carolina. The tour will likely feature music from The Sirens, as well as other projects that Geologist has been working on. Fans of Animal Collective and experimental music will not want to miss this opportunity to experience Geologist's innovative sound live.

The release of The Sirens is a significant event in the music world, as it showcases the possibilities of using technology and nature to create new and innovative sounds. As the music industry continues to evolve, artists like Geologist are pushing the boundaries of what is possible, and The Sirens is a testament to the exciting new directions that music can take.
