Netflix Greenlights 'Bridgerton' Prequel

Netflix has greenlit a new limited series spinoff in the Bridgerton universe, focused on a young Lady Violet and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The series, which is currently untitled, will be written, executive produced, and showrun by Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini.

The series will chronicle the early life of Lady Violet, a character played by Ruth Gemmell in the original Bridgerton series. In the spinoff Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, a younger version of Lady Violet was played by Connie Jenkins-Greig. It is unclear whether Jenkins-Greig will reprise her role in the new series.

Tom Verica will direct and executive produce the series, and Betsy Beers will also executive produce. The series is similar to the hit spinoff Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which was also produced by Shondaland.

The news comes as Season 5 of Bridgerton is currently in production in London, with the focus on Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling. The Bridgerton series is based on novels by Julia Quinn, who wrote a special novella for Lady Violet in The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After, which contains a bonus chapter Violet in Bloom.

## Why it matters The Bridgerton universe has been a massive success for Netflix, with the original series and its spinoffs attracting a large and dedicated fan base. The new limited series will provide fans with a deeper look into the backstory of one of the show's most beloved characters, Lady Violet. With Shonda Rhimes at the helm, the series is likely to be a hit with fans of the franchise.

The greenlighting of the new series also highlights Netflix's commitment to expanding the Bridgerton universe, with the show already renewed through a sixth season. The success of the franchise has also led to the development of more spinoffs, with other characters potentially getting their own limited series in the future.
