Tilda Swinton Memoir 'Material Evidence' Out 2028
The Oscar-winning actor's debut memoir, to be published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, tells her story through objects, including a christening dress and a wooden leg, in an unconventional format inspired by memory

Tilda Swinton is set to publish her debut memoir, 'Material Evidence', in the fall of 2028. The book, which will be published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, promises to be an unconventional take on the traditional memoir format.
The memoir will tell Swinton's story through objects, rather than following a chronological format. These objects include a christening dress, a letter, a wooden leg, a sweatshirt, a length of embroidery silk, and a photograph. This approach is inspired by the way memory works, with the book proceeding object by object to reflect the associative and sensory nature of memory.
Tilda Swinton has described 'Material Evidence' as 'a book about curiosity'. She hopes that by the time readers finish the book, they will feel 'affirmed and recharged with energy to value the difference between that elusive spirit that we each, uniquely, constitute, which changes constantly – evolving and developing – and that solid matter which stays the same in its essence – and consistently repays and feeds us, the world around us and all the things in it that make up our singular lives'.
FSG president Mitzi Angel, who will edit Swinton's book, has long admired the actor's 'unique way of seeing things'. Angel describes the objects in the book as 'vibrat[ing] with meaning and memory', and believes that through these objects, Swinton 'brings us the story of life'.
Tilda Swinton has had a long and distinguished film career, beginning in the 1980s with British filmmaker Derek Jarman. She has starred in several notable films, including 'We Need to Talk About Kevin', 'Suspiria', and Wes Anderson's 'The Grand Budapest Hotel', 'Isle of Dogs', and 'Asteroid City'. Swinton won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 'Michael Clayton'.
## Why it matters The publication of 'Material Evidence' is significant not only because it is Tilda Swinton's debut memoir, but also because of its unconventional format. The book's focus on objects and memory promises to offer a unique perspective on Swinton's life and career. With its release in the fall of 2028, 'Material Evidence' is likely to generate significant interest among fans of the actor and those interested in innovative storytelling.
This is not Swinton's first foray into publishing. She released her first book, 'Tilda Swinton: Ongoing', in September 2025. 'Material Evidence' is her second published book, and its release is highly anticipated.
