Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has stated that the company needs to focus on affordability for its next-generation console, amid rising hardware costs partly driven by AI spending. The company is exploring new ways to sell Xboxes, including potentially offering pay-monthly plans, in response to the component pricing crisis caused by huge AI datacenter demand for memory and storage chips.

The next-generation Xbox console is currently codenamed Project Helix. Xbox will allow players to digitize their physical games into an online library, with 1,000 titles available for digital entitlement. This move is seen as a way to give players a choice in how they purchase content, including physical and digital media.

The component pricing crisis is caused by huge AI datacenter demand for memory and storage chips. Microsoft raised the price of Xbox consoles again earlier this month, with a 512GB Xbox Series S now costing £430 and a 1TB disc-drive Xbox Series X costing £670. The price of a 512GB Xbox Series S was initially £250, and the price of a 1TB disc-drive Xbox Series X was initially £450.

Asha Sharma has previously stated that Microsoft is exploring new ways to sell Xboxes, including potentially offering pay-monthly plans. The company has pioneered backwards compatibility and will continue to do so in future generations. Sharma wants to give players a choice in how they purchase content, including physical and digital media.

## Why it matters The focus on affordability is crucial for the gaming industry, as rising hardware costs are making it difficult for consumers to purchase consoles. The component pricing crisis is not limited to Xbox, and other companies are also feeling the pressure. As AI continues to drive demand for memory and storage chips, the industry needs to find ways to make gaming affordable. Xbox's move to offer pay-monthly plans and digitize physical games is a step in this direction.

## What happens next The exact details of the pay-monthly plans and the digital entitlement program are not yet clear. However, it is expected that Xbox will continue to innovate on affordability and efficiency as it moves forward with its next-generation console. The company's focus on giving players a choice in how they purchase content is likely to be a key aspect of its strategy.
