EPFO Pension Benefits: ₹1,000 Minimum Monthly Pension
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation has introduced various updates to its rules and services, including a 12-month waiting period for premature final EPF settlement and a 36-month waiting period for withdrawal benefits under the Employees' Pension Scheme

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) provides pension benefits to eligible employees who have an account with it for more than 10 years. The minimum pension for the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) is ₹1,000 per month.
EPFO members can withdraw up to 75% of their balance under three broad heads—essential needs, housing needs and special circumstances. The EPFO has simplified and liberalised the rules for partial withdrawals and advances.
The EPFO has introduced a 12-month waiting period for premature final EPF settlement and a 36-month waiting period for withdrawal benefits under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS). The EPFO plans to extend its auto-settlement process to include final PF withdrawal claims.
The EPFO has made it easier for employees to transfer their PF balance after they switch employers, with the entire process expected to become automatic for Aadhaar-linked and KYC-compliant UAN holders. The EPFO expects most fresh PF withdrawal claims filed by members to be settled on the same day or within a maximum of two days.
EPS 2026 sets a strict 20-day timeline for processing eligible pension claims. The EPFO has received 15.24 lakh applications for higher EPS pension as of August 5, 2026.
## What it means for employees The EPFO's pension scheme provides a safety net for employees, ensuring a minimum monthly pension of ₹1,000. The scheme is available to employees who have contributed to the EPF for more than 10 years. The pension amount is calculated based on the average salary of the last 60 months and the years of service.
## Why it matters The EPFO's updates to its rules and services aim to make it easier for employees to access their pension benefits. The introduction of a 12-month waiting period for premature final EPF settlement and a 36-month waiting period for withdrawal benefits under the EPS is expected to encourage employees to plan for their retirement. The EPFO's efforts to simplify and liberalise the rules for partial withdrawals and advances will also benefit employees who need to access their funds for essential needs or housing needs.
The EPFO's pension scheme is an important aspect of India's social security system, providing a financial safety net for millions of employees. The scheme's updates and improvements will have a significant impact on the lives of employees, ensuring that they have a secure retirement and access to their pension benefits when they need them.
## What happens next The EPFO will continue to process pension claims and settle fresh PF withdrawal claims filed by members. The organisation will also work to extend its auto-settlement process to include final PF withdrawal claims, making it easier for employees to access their funds. As the EPFO receives more applications for higher EPS pension, it will process these claims in accordance with the strict 20-day timeline set by EPS 2026.
The EPFO's efforts to improve its services and rules will benefit employees, providing them with a secure retirement and access to their pension benefits. As the organisation continues to update and improve its services, employees can expect a more efficient and streamlined process for accessing their pension benefits.
