Users can now pay 22,722 billers across 30 categories, including electricity and credit card bills, directly within the messaging app

WhatsApp has launched a new bill payment feature in India, allowing users to find, manage, and pay household and utility bills directly within the messaging app. The feature gives users access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories, including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card and loan repayments.
The feature is powered by the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network and will be rolled out gradually to Android and iOS users across India. Users can pay bills for various services, including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card and loan repayments.
Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head of Meta India, said the feature aims to bring simplicity to routine household tasks. The feature will allow users to manage multiple accounts under a single provider, making it easier to keep track of bills and payments.
To access bill payments, users can tap the ₹ icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. From there, they can view past payments, upcoming bills, and manage multiple accounts under a single provider. The feature will also allow users to choose their preferred payment method.
## What it means The launch of the bill payment feature comes as India's digital payments ecosystem continues to expand rapidly. With the mass adoption of UPI, growing smartphone penetration, and an increasingly wide range of everyday transactions moving online, the feature is expected to make paying bills more convenient and effortless for users.
The feature is part of Meta's efforts to expand WhatsApp's role beyond messaging and deepen its presence in India's digital payments market. With the launch of the bill payment feature, WhatsApp is poised to compete with other digital payment platforms in India, such as PhonePe and Google Pay.
## Why it matters The launch of the bill payment feature is significant because it highlights the growing importance of digital payments in India. With the increasing adoption of UPI and other digital payment methods, the feature is expected to make a significant impact on the way Indians pay their bills. The feature is also expected to contribute to the growth of India's digital economy, making it easier for people to access financial services and make transactions online.
The feature is also a testament to WhatsApp's commitment to innovation and customer convenience. By providing users with a seamless and secure way to pay their bills, WhatsApp is expected to further cement its position as a leading messaging app in India.
