Adani Ports Launches Empty Container Yard
Mundra Port to get dedicated yard, streamlining container handling and adding 6 million TEUs of capacity over five years

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) is set to launch a dedicated Empty Container Yard at Mundra Port, aiming to enhance efficiency across the container ecosystem. The move will offer end-to-end services across the empty container lifecycle, including storage, maintenance, inspection, and seamless movement to exporters and Container Freight Stations.
Mundra Port handles about 35 per cent of India’s container trade, including nearly 1.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of empty containers annually. The dedicated Empty Container Yard will be operated by APSEZ and/or partners, including CFS and shipping lines.
Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director and Chief Executive Officer, APSEZ, stated that the dedicated Empty Container Yard will enable faster turnaround times, reduce unnecessary container movements, and optimise logistics costs.
APSEZ plans to add more than 6 million TEUs of container handling capacity over the next five years. The company commands a 45 per cent share of India’s container market as of FY26.
## What it means The launch of the dedicated Empty Container Yard is part of APSEZ's 'Ambition 2031' roadmap, which aims to support India's growth by strengthening trade-enabling infrastructure. The move is expected to streamline container handling and improve services for shipping lines and customers. With Mundra Port handling a significant portion of India's container trade, the dedicated Empty Container Yard will play a critical role in supporting the country's import-export supply chains.
The Kandla Mundra Container Transport Welfare Association has stopped picking containers in a show of solidarity with the striking empty depot operators, highlighting the need for efficient container handling services. The dedicated Empty Container Yard at Mundra Port is expected to address this need and enhance the overall efficiency of the container ecosystem.
