India Railways Tightens Component Checks
Indian Railways will enforce strict marking schemes for critical freight components to fix warranty gaps after several equipment failures with illegible or missing markings, affecting traceability and manufacturer responsibility

Indian Railways has announced plans to tighten component checks to address warranty gaps by ensuring complete and accurate markings for critical freight components. The move comes after several instances of equipment failures with illegible or missing markings, which hindered the identification of manufacturers and affected traceability.
The Railways Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) has directed zonal railways, wagon manufacturers, and inspection agencies to strictly enforce the prescribed marking scheme for critical freight components. Mandatory markings for components include the manufacturer's name or code, serial or batch number, month and year of manufacture, drawing or material code, heat number, and other specified details.
The location, size, depth, type, and application method of markings must conform with RDSO specifications, drawings, and approved quality assurance plans. Zonal railways will conduct random checks on newly supplied components during receipt, fitment, and inspection at workshops, routine overhaul depots, and examination yards.
The components in focus include couplers, draft gears, brake blocks, compressed-air brake equipment, helical springs, side bearers, adapters, brake beams, friction wedges, bogies, liners, and wear plates. If markings are missing, incomplete, incorrect, or illegible, the entire lot of the component concerned will be rejected.
Manufacturers or supplier-vendors must arrange replacement under the applicable warranty or contractual provisions and may be required to bear transportation expenses. The Quality Assurance (Mechanical) Directorate and third-party inspection agencies will verify compliance during inspections.
## Why it matters The new measures aim to fix warranty gaps and ensure that critical freight components are properly marked, allowing for easier identification of manufacturers and improved traceability. This is crucial for maintaining the safety and efficiency of India's rail network, which is one of the largest in the world. By enforcing strict marking schemes, Indian Railways can reduce the risk of equipment failures and improve the overall quality of its freight components.
## What happens next The implementation of these new measures is expected to have a significant impact on the rail industry, with manufacturers and suppliers required to adhere to the prescribed marking scheme. The random checks conducted by zonal railways will help to ensure compliance, and the rejection of components with missing or illegible markings will encourage manufacturers to improve their quality control processes. As a result, Indian Railways can expect to see an improvement in the safety and reliability of its freight operations, which will have a positive impact on the entire rail network.
