Apple Vision Pro Was Almost 'Reality Pro'
The tech giant's latest headset was internally referred to as 'Reality Pro' during development, with trademark filings for the name dating back to 2022

Apple's Vision Pro headset was initially referred to as 'Reality Pro' during its development, according to a post on X by prototype collector and leaker Kosutami. The name change occurred before its unveiling at WWDC 2023.
Kosutami pointed to an internal string 'realityprorealityosdev' as evidence of the headset's original name. This is not the first time the 'Reality Pro' name has been associated with Apple's headset. In September 2022, Mark Gurman reported that Apple's first headset would likely launch as 'Apple Reality Pro'.
Trademark filings for 'Reality One', 'Reality Pro', and 'Reality Processor' surfaced in August 2022, filed through a shell company called Immersive Health Solutions LLC. An earlier trademark application for 'realityOS' was filed in December 2021 by Realityo Systems LLC. Additional trademark activity surfaced in mid-2023 for terms like 'xrOS', 'xrProOS', 'realityproOS', and 'realOS'.
## What changed The name change from 'Reality Pro' to 'Vision Pro' occurred before the headset's unveiling at WWDC 2023. The reasons behind the name change are not clear, but it is likely that Apple wanted to differentiate its product from other reality-based technologies.
## Why it matters The 'Reality Pro' name suggests that Apple's headset was initially intended to be a more immersive reality experience. The name change to 'Vision Pro' may indicate a shift in focus towards a more general-purpose device. The trademark filings and internal strings provide insight into Apple's development process and the evolution of its products.
The 'Reality Pro' name is not entirely gone, as it is still referenced in some internal strings and trademark filings. However, the final product has been released as the Vision Pro, and it remains to be seen how it will be received by consumers.
