Dodo Bird: Not So Dumb

The dodo bird, extinct for over 300 years, has long been thought of as a simple and dim-witted creature. However, new research suggests that this reputation may be undeserved.

CT scans of rare dodo skulls have revealed that the bird may have had a stronger sense of smell, a highly sensitive beak, and a lifestyle that extended into dawn and dusk. This discovery challenges the traditional view of the dodo as a slow and bumbling bird, and instead suggests that it may have been relatively intelligent and nocturnal.

The part of the dodo's brain responsible for visual processing was small, comparable to that of some nocturnal birds. This, combined with the fact that dodos were likely fast and powerful, suggests that they may have been well adapted to a lifestyle that involved activity at dawn and dusk.

In terms of intelligence, dodos were likely as smart as modern pigeons, which are capable of solving problems and understanding abstract concepts like space and time. This level of intelligence is impressive, especially considering the dodo's brain scaled with their body size as would be expected for their group, which is made up of pigeons and doves.

## Why it matters The discovery of the dodo's secret sensory world is significant because it challenges centuries-old myths about the bird. For over 300 years, the dodo has been extinct, wiped out within a century of humans settling on its island home of Mauritius in 1598. The new research helps to overturn these myths and reveal a far more complex animal than the famously “dumb” dodo of popular imagination.

The dodo's story serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and respecting the natural world. As a global symbol of human-caused extinction, the dodo's legacy continues to live on in the public imagination. By learning more about this fascinating bird, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the importance of conservation and the impact of human actions on the environment.
