HP Laser 1008a Gets Native macOS Driver
Developer Kuberwastaken uses Claude Code to create a macOS driver for the HP Laser 1008a printer, available on GitHub, bringing compatibility to Apple devices

A developer has created a native macOS driver for the HP Laser 1008a printer, which was previously only compatible with Windows. The driver, developed by Kuberwastaken using Claude Code, is now available on GitHub.
The HP Laser 1008a printer is a rebadged version of Samsung's SPL3 lasers, and HP does not provide a native macOS driver for the device. However, Kuberwastaken's driver uses a Linux container to deliver print jobs over USB, making it possible for macOS users to print to the device.
The driver supports other HP Laser printer models, including the 1003, 1006, and 1008. To install the driver, users need to have Homebrew installed on their system and can then use a one-time command to set up the driver.
## What's behind the driver The driver leverages HP's own rastertospl, which is also used by the HP Unified Linux Driver. This codec is inserted inside a tiny Linux container, which delivers the result over USB. The driver may be slow from idle to first print and requires Colima to be running.
## Why it matters The creation of this driver is significant because it brings compatibility to Apple devices that were previously unable to print to the HP Laser 1008a. This is a notable development for users who own the printer and want to use it with their macOS devices. The driver's availability on GitHub also makes it easily accessible to users who want to install it.
The success of this project demonstrates the potential of using Claude Code to develop drivers for devices that are not natively supported by macOS. It also highlights the importance of community-driven development and the role that individual developers can play in creating solutions that benefit a wider audience.
