Largest Electric Plane Takes Flight
Heart Aerospace's X1 demonstrator aircraft, spanning 106 feet, flew for 27 minutes on $5 worth of electricity, paving the way for hybrid-electric commercial aircraft

The largest battery-electric plane ever made, Heart Aerospace's X1 demonstrator, has successfully completed its maiden flight, lasting 27 minutes and reaching an altitude of 1,100 feet above ground level. The flight, which used approximately $5 worth of electricity, marks a significant milestone in the development of electric commercial aircraft.
The X1 demonstrator, with a wingspan of 106 feet and weighing over 25,000 pounds at takeoff, is a full-scale representative of Heart Aerospace's ES-30 production aircraft. The ES-30 is a conventional fixed-wing, 30-seat hybrid-electric regional airliner being developed for FAA Part 25 certification.
The successful flight of the X1 demonstrator is a crucial step towards the introduction of the ES-30 into service by 2031. The ES-30 is expected to have an all-electric range of 125 miles, and up to 500 miles with the hybrid engine. The aircraft's all-electric propulsion system delivered more than one megawatt of power during the maiden flight.
The flight was conducted under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category (SAC-EC), with a test profile that included taxi, takeoff, climb, maneuvering, and landing. The mission was designed to demonstrate all-electric flight at a scale relevant to commercial airline operations.

With the rising cost of jet fuel, which averaged $3.50 per gallon in the week ending August 7, up 63% year over year, electric propulsion could deliver structurally lower aircraft operating costs while decoupling airlines from the volatility of global oil markets.
The successful flight of the X1 demonstrator has already garnered interest from major airlines, including United Airlines and Air Canada, which are looking to add electric planes to their fleets.
