Microsoft has announced plans to deprecate Windows Deployment Services (WDS) starting with the next Windows Server release. WDS, a revised version of Remote Installation Services (RIS), allows IT administrators to remotely install Windows operating systems on fleets of computers over a network.

The deprecation of WDS is not a sudden move, as Microsoft had partially deprecated it in 2021 by removing boot.wim support. Additionally, the company disabled hands-free deployment in WDS by default for all customers who installed the April 2026 Windows updates or any subsequent ones.

Microsoft had also stopped officially supporting the deployment of standard desktop operating systems using its native setup engine starting with Windows 11. As a result, WDS was restricted to deploying Windows Server or booting custom deployment environments.

## What happens next Deprecated products, including WDS, are supported until they are eventually removed from a future OS version. However, WDS will continue to work on all currently supported Windows Server versions according to their published servicing lifecycles.

## Alternatives Microsoft recommends customers migrate to alternatives like Microsoft Configuration Manager for deploying Windows images. Notably, Microsoft Configuration Manager operating system deployment is not being affected by the deprecation of WDS.

## Why it matters The deprecation of WDS may impact IT administrators who rely on the service to deploy Windows operating systems. However, with the recommendation to migrate to alternatives like Microsoft Configuration Manager, customers can ensure a smooth transition. The move is part of Microsoft's efforts to streamline its services and focus on more efficient deployment methods.

The deprecation of WDS serves as a reminder for customers to review their deployment strategies and consider alternative solutions. As Microsoft continues to evolve its services, it is essential for customers to stay up-to-date with the latest developments and adjust their practices accordingly.
