Scientists capture rare footage of 1.25m Magnapinna squid in Northeastern Pacific Ocean, a first for the region
A rare encounter with a Magnapinna squid, also known as the bigfin squid, has been documented by scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in the Northeastern Pacific Ocean. The encounter, which took place on 7 August, occurred at a depth of 3,277 meters, and the squid was estimated to be around 1.25 meters long from the top of its body to the ends of its arms.
The research team used a remotely operated vehicle called Doc Ricketts to survey the seafloor near Davidson Seamount, off the coast of Central California.
