Scammers Target AC Buyers
With portable air conditioners sold out everywhere, fake online stores are taking advantage of desperate buyers, warning experts urge caution when shopping online for cooling solutions

Scammers are taking advantage of the high demand for air conditioners during heatwaves by setting up fake storefronts, and industry experts are warning consumers to be cautious when buying air conditioners online. Portable air conditioners have sold out virtually everywhere this summer, and searches for homes with air conditioning have more than doubled in the UK.
Meaco, a company that specializes in air conditioners, has found online stores claiming to have its products in stock at higher than usual prices, and which appear to take customers' money without supplying the products. The company's Founder and Managing Director, Chris Michael, warns that scammers often take advantage when temperatures rise and demand for air conditioners increases.
The UK's Climate Change Committee has reported that hotter heatwaves could lead to 92% of existing homes overheating by 2050, making air conditioning a priority for many homebuyers. An estimated 4m homes in the UK now have air conditioning, double the figure from three years ago. Searches for homes for sale in the UK with air conditioning have increased by 104% compared to the same period last year, according to property website Rightmove.
## Why it matters The rise in demand for air conditioning is not only driven by the heatwaves but also by the increasing awareness of the importance of staying cool. With air conditioning accounting for about 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, it is essential for consumers to make informed decisions when purchasing cooling solutions. Experts advise consumers to check the seller as carefully as the product and be cautious of unfamiliar websites offering stock that is unavailable elsewhere.
## What happens next As the summer heat continues, consumers are advised to be vigilant when shopping for air conditioners online. With big retailers like Currys, John Lewis, Argos, and Screwfix having sold out of portable air conditioners, consumers may be tempted to consider other online stores. However, it is crucial to prioritize caution and thoroughly research the seller before making a purchase. By being aware of the potential scams and taking necessary precautions, consumers can protect themselves from losing money to fake online stores.
The demand for air conditioning is expected to continue to rise, with 61% of people in the UK saying they would consider installing air conditioning, and 87% considering a property's ability to stay cool as important when choosing their next home. As the UK's warmest summers continue to break records, it is essential for consumers to stay informed and make smart decisions when it comes to cooling their homes.
