Schizophrenia & Bipolar Disorder Share Brain Pattern
A new study finds that brain scans of people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder show similar patterns of reduced coordination among brain regions, with 89 schizophrenia patients and 57 bipolar patients compared to 45 healthy controls

The study, which compared resting-state functional MRI scans from 89 people with schizophrenia, 57 with bipolar I disorder, and 45 healthy controls, found that both patient groups showed lower network synchronization than the control group.
The participants in the study, who were between 18 and 50 years old, underwent resting-state functional MRI scans, which recorded how activity changed across the brain while each person rested. The brain was divided into 90 regions to look for regions whose activity rose and fell at similar times. This allowed researchers to identify areas of the brain that were functionally connected, meaning they showed coordinated activity over time.
The study found that both patient groups showed altered communication among regions involved in memory, emotion, attention, vision, and sensory processing. Additionally, connections between systems that help direct attention and those involved in memory and emotion were stronger than in the control group. However, the pattern of reduced coordination was broader in people with schizophrenia, with weaker communication within systems involved in sensation and movement.
The study was led by psychiatrist Li Zhang of Anhui Medical University in China, and its findings have significant implications for our understanding of these two conditions. Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are both complex mental health conditions that can affect a person's perception of reality, thoughts, and emotions. While they have distinct symptoms, they can be difficult to distinguish, particularly in cases where psychosis is involved.
