SK Hynix Breaks Ground on $4B AI Chip Plant
The Indiana facility, set to begin production in 2029, will support 1,000 jobs and help address the global memory shortage, with the US government committing $958 million in funding

SK Hynix has held a groundbreaking ceremony for a $4 billion AI chip packaging facility in Indiana, which is expected to begin mass production of next-generation HBM chips in the third quarter of 2029. The facility will support a workforce of around 1,000 people and is part of the company's efforts to address the global memory shortage, which is expected to persist through 2030.
The Indiana facility represents a total investment of more than $4 billion and will be located at Purdue Research Park. The overall investment is projected to sustain roughly 7,000 jobs in total when construction, ongoing operations, and supplier activity are counted together.
SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung warned that the current memory shortage will persist through 2030, but the company is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for high-bandwidth memory. The company held a 58% share of global HBM revenue in the first quarter of 2026, outpacing its competitors.
The US government has committed to supporting the project with $458 million in direct funding and $500 million in loans. The facility will receive DRAM wafers manufactured in South Korea and carry out the stacking, packaging, and testing steps needed to turn them into finished HBM products for American customers.
## Why it matters The global memory shortage has significant implications for the tech industry, and SK Hynix's investment in the Indiana facility is a major bet on the US AI supply chain. The company's major customers, including Nvidia, Microsoft, and Alphabet's Google, are driving demand for high-bandwidth memory, and the facility will allow SK Hynix to produce chips closer to these customers.
The facility is expected to open its cleanroom by October 2028, with mass production set to begin in 2029. The investment is a significant boost to the local economy and reinforces the US as a major player in the global tech industry.
## What happens next As the facility moves towards mass production, SK Hynix will be closely watched by investors and industry analysts. The company's dominant market position and bullish outlook, combined with the growing demand for AI chips, make it an exciting time for the company and the industry as a whole.
