Spacecraft Gets 15km Close to Doomed NASA Telescope
Private spacecraft Link attempted to rescue Swift Observatory but turned away due to low fuel, despite getting within 15 kilometers of the telescope in a $30 million mission

A private spacecraft, Link, got within 15 kilometers of NASA's doomed Swift Observatory in a last-ditch attempt to save the telescope. However, the rescue effort was ultimately abandoned due to Link's own troubles in orbit, which were blamed on the rush to get it flying.
The mission was thrown together in just nine months, with engineers often having to use available parts instead of waiting for preferred ones. This led to Link experiencing problems, including an uncontrollable spin soon after launch, which used up precious fuel. Despite managing to stabilize the spacecraft, there wasn't enough fuel remaining to boost the aging Swift to a higher orbit.
NASA paid Katalyst Space Technologies $30 million to carry out the rescue attempt, which was always going to be a long shot. The space agency and the company viewed it as an experiment with little to lose, although they wanted to avoid a wreck that would unleash clouds of space debris.
The Swift Observatory was launched in 2004 and has been observing the cosmos for nearly two decades. Meanwhile, NASA's new Roman Space Telescope, which is designed to be refuelable, is headed toward an observation point 1 million miles away.
