Tencent is selling US dollar and offshore Chinese yuan bonds to raise at least $4.5 billion, amid increased spending on artificial intelligence. The bond sale includes 10-year and 20-year US dollar notes and 10-year and 30-year offshore yuan notes.

The company's capital expenditure has seen a significant increase, more than doubling to 96.3 billion yuan in the first half of 2026, compared to 45.9 billion yuan in the first half of 2025. This surge in spending is largely driven by Tencent's investment in AI infrastructure and products.

The bond sale has garnered significant interest, with order books for the two-tranche dollar offering topping $2 billion. Additionally, books for the 10-year and 30-year offshore yuan notes exceeded 35 billion yuan ($5.2 billion). The bonds are expected to be rated A1 by Moody's and A+ by S&P.

Tencent plans to use the proceeds from the bond sale for general corporate purposes. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the bond sale.

## Why it matters The bond sale is a significant move for Tencent, as it seeks to fund its growing investment in artificial intelligence. The company's increased spending on AI infrastructure and products is a strategic move to stay competitive in the tech industry. The success of the bond sale will be closely watched, as it will provide insight into investor confidence in Tencent's growth prospects.

The bond sale is also a testament to the growing demand for AI-related investments. As companies like Tencent continue to invest heavily in AI, it is likely that we will see more bond sales and funding rounds in the future. The outcome of this bond sale will be an important indicator of the market's appetite for AI-related investments.
