Tim Cook is stepping down as Apple CEO after nearly 15 years at the helm, with John Ternus set to take charge of the company's daily operations on September 1. Cook will move into the executive chairman role, marking a significant shift in leadership for the tech giant.

During his tenure, Cook oversaw the sale of approximately 3.1 billion iPhone devices, a key factor in the company's growth. Apple's market capitalization has also grown from $350 billion to over $4 trillion under his leadership, making it one of the most valuable companies in the world.

John Ternus, who has been with Apple since 2001, will succeed Cook as CEO. Ternus has most recently served as senior vice president of hardware engineering and has worked on some of the company's most important hardware products. At 50, he is the youngest member of Apple's executive leadership team.

Cook became CEO in August 2011, just before Steve Jobs's death, and has since built a different Apple from the one Jobs left behind. He focused on scale, operational discipline, services, supply-chain control, and monetization of Apple's huge device base. This approach has made Apple one of the most successful companies in the world, but it also leaves Ternus with significant challenges, including issues related to China, regulators, and artificial intelligence.

Under Cook's leadership, Apple has expanded its workforce from an estimated 60,000 in 2011 to over 166,000 today. The company has also grown its retail footprint to over 500 stores worldwide and has approximately 1.5 billion subscribers paying to use its services.

## What's Next As Ternus takes the reins, he will face the task of building on Cook's legacy while addressing the challenges facing the company. With Apple's significant growth and expansion, the company is well-positioned for the future, but it will be up to Ternus to navigate the complexities of the tech industry and maintain Apple's position as a leader.

## Background Cook's time at Apple has been marked by significant growth and innovation. He has overseen the development of new products and services, including the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, and Apple Pay. These verticals have become central to the business, making Apple less dependent on hardware sales alone. As Cook moves into the executive chairman role, he will likely continue to play a significant role in shaping the company's direction, but it will be up to Ternus to lead the company's daily operations and make key decisions about its future.
