1,000s Promote Breastfeeding
A walkathon in Chennai and a rally in Vellore highlighted the importance of breastfeeding and donor human milk ahead of World Breastfeeding Week, observed from August 1-7

A breastfeeding awareness walkathon was held at Besant Nagar Beach in Chennai on Saturday, bringing together healthcare professionals, medical students, nurses and volunteers to promote the importance of breastfeeding and donor human milk.
The walkathon was held ahead of World Breastfeeding Week, which is observed from August 1-7. The event was organised by the Neonatology Association of Tamil Nadu in association with the Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk.
The walkathon highlighted exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life, continued breastfeeding with appropriate complementary feeding, and the role of human milk banks in improving outcomes for sick and preterm newborns. The organisers said sustained support from families, healthcare providers, workplaces, communities and policymakers is essential to help mothers breastfeed successfully and improve maternal and child health.
In addition to the walkathon in Chennai, a rally to mark World Breastfeeding Awareness Week was held in Vellore. The rally was organised by Sandhya Hospital and aimed to create awareness of the importance of breastfeeding and its benefits. Doctors, nurses, nursing college students, and hospital staff participated in the rally, carrying placards with awareness messages highlighting the importance of breastfeeding.
## Why it matters The promotion of breastfeeding is crucial for improving maternal and child health. Breastfeeding provides essential nutrients and antibodies to newborns, and has been shown to reduce the risk of infections and diseases. However, many mothers face challenges in breastfeeding, including lack of support from families and healthcare providers, and inadequate facilities in workplaces and public spaces. The walkathon and rally aimed to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and the need for sustained support from all stakeholders.
## What happens next As World Breastfeeding Week continues, more events and activities are expected to be held across the country to promote breastfeeding and donor human milk. The organisers of the walkathon and rally hope that their efforts will help to create a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers and improve maternal and child health outcomes.
