3,000 Join Organ Donation Walk
Awareness programs across India aim to debunk myths and increase donations, with nearly 4,800 people in Andhra Pradesh awaiting kidney transplants

Around 3,000 participants took part in an awareness walk in Nellore on August 13, 2026, to create awareness about the importance of organ donation. The event was part of International Organ Donation Day, which saw various awareness programs organized across India to promote organ donation and encourage more people to come forward as donors.
According to liver transplant surgeon Dr Vaibhaw Kumar, there is no age limit for becoming an organ donor. Individuals with diabetes and high blood pressure can also donate organs if certain criteria are met. A single organ donor can save up to eight lives and restore sight to several others through corneal donation.
In Andhra Pradesh, nearly 4,800 people are awaiting kidney transplants, while only about 350 transplants are being performed annually. This highlights the need for increased awareness and donation. Doctors decide in each case whether a person's organs and tissue are suitable for donation, and there are very few conditions where organ donation is ruled out completely.
The US Department of Health and Human Services recently announced the immediate decertification of the Network for Hope, a US organ donation organization, due to concerns about its practices. This decision underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in organ donation.
## Why it matters Organ donation is a critical issue that affects thousands of people in India and around the world. The shortage of organ donors remains a major challenge, despite the growing number of patients waiting for transplants. By increasing awareness and debunking myths about organ donation, experts hope to encourage more people to come forward as donors. This can help save lives and improve the quality of life for those in need of transplants.
The final decision about whether some or all organs or tissue are suitable for transplant is always made by the doctors at the time of donation, taking into account a person's medical, travel, and social history. By discussing organ donation with their family members in advance and communicating their wishes clearly, individuals can help ensure that their organs are donated and used to save lives.
