Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met the family of a 13-year-old boy who died while trying to save his pet puppy from flood water, as the state's flood situation remains critical with a death toll of 100 and over 1.37 lakh people affected across seven districts.
The flood situation in Assam has claimed 100 lives so far, with over 1.37 lakh people affected in seven districts. Golaghat is the worst-hit district, with almost 70,000 people affected. The floods have damaged embankments, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure in several districts.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has warned people to stay away from several rising rivers, including the Dhansiri river at Golaghat and Numaligarh, and the Kushiyara river at Sribhumi, which are flowing above the danger level. The floods have also affected 43,331 domestic animals and poultry across the state.
The administration has been operating 125 relief camps and relief distribution centres in six districts, taking care of 49,061 people at present. The Chief Minister's meeting with the family of the 13-year-old boy who died saving his puppy is a gesture of solidarity with the affected families.

Experts believe that environmental degradation, including deforestation and excavation, may have intensified the disaster.
