A recent survey by the Allensbach Institute has found that Berlin is losing its appeal to many Germans. Only 31% of respondents consider the city to be a 'fascinating metropolis', a significant decline from 2007 when 66% thought it was 'fascinating'. In contrast, 36% of respondents now think Berlin lacks charisma.

The survey, which polled 1,039 people, also found that Hamburg and Munich are more appealing to Germans, with 48% and 47% of respondents respectively finding them attractive. This shift in perception is notable, given Berlin's reputation as a vibrant and cultural hub.

The decline in Berlin's appeal is further underscored by the fact that 46% of respondents would not want to live in the city, making it the least popular city alongside Frankfurt am Main. This is a significant change from 2007, when only 14% of respondents said Berlin lacked appeal.

## What changed The survey's findings suggest that Berlin's charm has worn off for many Germans. The city's rapid growth and gentrification may have contributed to this decline, as rising rents and property prices have put a strain on its nightlife and cultural scene.

## Why it matters The loss of appeal for Berlin has significant implications for the city's economy and cultural scene. As the capital city, Berlin plays a crucial role in attracting tourists, businesses, and talent. If it continues to lose its charm, it may struggle to compete with other cities like Hamburg and Munich.

The survey's findings also highlight the challenges faced by Berlin in maintaining its unique character and appeal. As the city continues to grow and develop, it must balance the needs of its residents, businesses, and visitors to ensure that it remains a vibrant and attractive place to live and visit.
