British rider killed in head-on collision with vehicle during Volta a Portugal, team withdraws from race
British cyclist Finlay Tarling, 19, has died in a crash during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal. The incident occurred on the 166.8km route from Melgaco to Fafe, when Tarling was involved in a head-on collision with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction and not connected to the event.
The stage was suspended with about 20km remaining, and the podium ceremony was cancelled as a sign of respect and mourning. Tarling's team, NSN Development, has withdrawn from the remaining stages of the Volta a Portugal.
Finlay Tarling is the younger brother of Netcompany-Ineos rider Josh. The Volta a Portugal will continue with the penultimate stage on Saturday, with tributes to be held for Tarling before the start. The main sponsors of the event have agreed to cancel all activities for the remaining two stages as a sign of respect and mourning.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro expressed his condolences to Tarling's family and team. An investigation into the accident is underway.
