A surge in WhatsApp hijacking scams has been reported in Hong Kong, with nearly 2,000 cases recorded in the first seven months of 2026. According to police reports, the number of cases increased by 169.7% from the same period last year, resulting in losses of HK$146.3 million.

The 1,993 cases logged from January to July 2026 represent a significant increase from the 739 cases recorded over the same period last year. Despite the rise in cases, the total loss decreased by 22.7% from HK$189.2 million over the same period last year.

Some victims have suffered substantial losses, with one individual losing as much as HK$12.2 million (US$1.55 million) in a single scam. Other victims have lost between HK$1 million and more than HK$10 million.

The rise in WhatsApp hijacking scam cases is attributed to the habits of residents using social media or instant messaging platforms. Superintendent Hui Yee-wai of the force's cyber security and technology crime bureau noted that artificial intelligence is also a factor, making it easier for scammers to generate fake websites.

## Why it matters The surge in WhatsApp hijacking scams is a concern for residents in Hong Kong, as it highlights the importance of being vigilant when using social media and instant messaging platforms. The use of artificial intelligence by scammers has made it easier for them to create fake websites, increasing the risk of falling victim to these scams. As the number of cases continues to rise, it is essential for individuals to be aware of the threat and take necessary precautions to protect themselves.

The decrease in total losses despite the increase in cases may indicate that scammers are targeting a larger number of victims with smaller amounts, rather than focusing on a few high-value targets. However, the fact that some victims have lost substantial amounts, including one individual who lost HK$12.2 million, highlights the potential for significant financial losses.

As the threat of WhatsApp hijacking scams continues to evolve, it is crucial for residents in Hong Kong to remain vigilant and take steps to protect themselves. This includes being cautious when receiving messages or clicking on links, as well as reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities.
