Japan's Crown Prince Fumihito has honored the Japanese community in Paraguay, which has played a significant role in building ties between the two countries. The community, estimated to be around 10,000-strong, has contributed to various sectors including agriculture, education, and society.

The crown prince expressed his gratitude to the community and hoped they would continue to act as a bridge between the two nations. He acknowledged that the two countries owed much of their close ties to the Japanese immigrants and their descendants.

The first group of Japanese settlers arrived in Paraguay in 1936, consisting of 81 people from 11 families. They founded a new settlement in La Colmena in the country's south-central region. Since then, the community has grown and thrived, with many members making significant contributions to Paraguayan society.

During his visit, the crown prince and his wife laid flowers at a memorial for deceased settlers. They also met with members of the Japanese community, including Ikuko Matsumiya, an 87-year-old who moved to Paraguay from Tochigi prefecture in 1956. The crown prince previously visited Paraguay in 2006 to mark the 70th anniversary of Japanese immigration to the country.
