Valleyview IGA Reopens
The beloved grocery store returns to west Edmonton's Parkview neighbourhood, hiring 45-50 people and sparking nostalgia among locals

The Valleyview IGA has reopened in west Edmonton's Parkview neighbourhood, replacing the short-lived L'OCA Quality Market. The store, located at 142 Street and 91 Avenue, has generated significant interest and nostalgia among local residents.
The new IGA has hired about 45-50 people, including some former L'OCA staff, to run the store. Store manager Stuart Trenchard, who has decades of experience in the grocery business, is at the helm. Trenchard started his career as a bag boy at the Morinville IGA and worked his way up to managing and owning other Sobeys properties in the Edmonton region.
The space was previously home to Andy's IGA for nearly six decades before owner Andy Taschuk retired in 2024. The reopening of the IGA has brought back a familiar name to the neighbourhood, which is a big draw for some shoppers. According to University of Alberta school of retailing director John Pracejus, having a neighbourhood grocery store under a familiar name is a significant advantage, especially with rising food prices in recent years.
City councillor Thu Parmar noted that the new IGA has hired students and people from the neighbourhood, which is a positive development for the community. The reopening of the store has also sparked nostalgia among locals, who are excited to have a community store that they can walk to.
## Why it matters The reopening of the Valleyview IGA is significant for the local community, as it provides a convenient and familiar grocery store option. The store's return is also a testament to the importance of local businesses in established neighbourhoods. As Trenchard noted, having a local grocery store means a lot to residents, who can now walk to the store instead of driving 10 or 15 minutes to other locations.
The Valleyview IGA's reopening is a welcome development for the Parkview neighbourhood, and its impact will be felt by local residents and businesses alike. With its rich history and commitment to the community, the store is poised to become a staple in the neighbourhood once again.
