Bank of America has launched a $250 billion initiative to finance US infrastructure development, targeting digital, energy, and core infrastructure projects. The initiative will be deployed over an 18-month period ending July 4, 2027.

The initiative will focus on projects that strengthen energy security, technological leadership, and long-term economic growth. This includes data centers, compute power, renewable-power generation, energy storage, natural gas, electricity transmission, and critical minerals and mining.

Bank of America's Global Capital Solutions and Global Infrastructure and Sustainable Finance teams will oversee the effort. The initiative has the potential to generate tens of thousands of positions spanning construction, manufacturing, technology, and the broader infrastructure workforce.

This initiative is in addition to an earlier commitment by the bank to back $1.5 trillion of sustainable-finance projects by 2030. Other major banks, such as Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase, have also announced significant infrastructure initiatives. Morgan Stanley has announced a $1.5 trillion infrastructure initiative, while JPMorgan Chase has announced a $1.5 trillion plan to invest in industries tied to national security and economic resilience.

## Why it matters The US is coping with aging infrastructure, and this initiative aims to support energy security, job growth, and economic competitiveness. The investment in critical infrastructure is intended to preserve the country's competitiveness and leadership for the next generation. As Karen Fang, global head of infrastructure and sustainable finance, noted, old infrastructure needs to be modernized to achieve this goal.

The initiative's focus on digital infrastructure, such as data centers and compute power, is particularly significant given the massive buildout of artificial-intelligence data-center capacity in the US. This buildout is straining the power grid in some areas, making investment in energy and power infrastructure crucial.

Bank of America reported second-quarter net income of $9.1 billion, up 27% from a year earlier, demonstrating the bank's financial strength and ability to support large-scale initiatives like this one.

## What happens next The initiative will be deployed over the next 18 months, with the goal of driving growth, creating jobs, and defining America's next chapter. As the US continues to invest in its infrastructure, it will be important to monitor the progress of this initiative and its impact on the country's economic competitiveness and energy security.
