India's first urban transport ropeway, set to launch in December 2026, will reduce travel time between Varanasi Cantt and Godowlia by 30 minutes, easing traffic congestion for thousands of commuters and tourists

The Varanasi ropeway project, India's first urban transport ropeway, is nearing completion and will significantly reduce travel time between Varanasi Cantt and Godowlia from 45 minutes to 15 minutes.
The project, which will cover approximately 4.2 km, is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 645 crore, although recent estimates suggest the total cost may be around ₹807-crore. The ropeway will have around 220 cable cars, each capable of carrying up to 10 passengers.
The Kashi Ropeway project has completed nearly 96% of the work, with trial runs currently underway. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project on March 24, 2023. The project is expected to be launched in December 2026, offering a faster travel option for commuters and tourists.
The ropeway will connect Cantt Railway Station to Godaulia, passing over some of the city's busiest stretches, where road traffic often slows down everyday travel. For commuters and visitors, the ropeway is expected to offer an alternative to navigating congested roads, particularly while travelling between the railway station and the areas around Godowlia.
