The Indian government has extended the validity period of environmental clearance for port, harbour, breakwater and dredging projects to 20 years from 10 years. This move is expected to boost the port sector and facilitate large investments from local and global port operators.

The extended validity period can be further extended by two periods of five years each, subject to compliance with certain safeguards. This change applies to future projects as well as those where the green clearance validity is still active and which are not yet completed.

The government aims to raise port capacity to 10,000 million metric tonnes per annum by 2047, a significant increase from the current capacity of 2,762 MMTPA. According to M Angamuthu, chairperson of Mumbai Port Authority, the extended validity period will benefit the port sector and facilitate large investments.

HC Balachandra, CEO of Karnataka Maritime Board, also stated that extending the validity period will provide greater certainty to stakeholders, particularly non-major ports and state governments. The notification for the extended validity period was issued through an amendment to the notification issued on September 14, 2006, under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

## What it means The extension of the green clearance validity period is a significant development for the port sector, as it provides greater certainty and stability for investors and operators. With the government's goal of raising port capacity to 10,000 million metric tonnes per annum by 2047, this move is expected to play a crucial role in achieving this target.

The previous validity period of 10 years was often cited as a limitation by stakeholders, who argued that it was not sufficient for the completion of large-scale projects. The new validity period of 20 years, with the possibility of further extensions, is expected to address this concern and attract more investments to the sector.

## Why it matters The extension of the green clearance validity period is important because it will have a direct impact on the development of the port sector in India. With the government's focus on increasing port capacity and facilitating large investments, this move is expected to contribute to the growth of the sector and the economy as a whole. The increased certainty and stability provided by the extended validity period will also help to attract more foreign investment and promote the development of non-major ports and state governments.
