India is planning to build the world's highest railway station at an altitude of 5,256 meters above sea level, surpassing China's record. The proposed railway station will be part of a Rs 1.31 lakh crore project that aims to connect Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh with Leh in Ladakh.

The project includes a 489 km long railway line, with 270 km of tunnels, and will pass through several important towns and locations, including Sundernagar, Mandi, Manali, Sissu, Darcha, Keylong, Sarchu, Pang, Rumtse, Upshi and Kharu before reaching Leh. The railway line is expected to improve connectivity to the strategically important Ladakh region.

The proposed railway station will be built beneath the Tanglang La pass and will overtake China's Tanggula railway station, which is located at an elevation of 5,068 meters. The project has been identified as a strategic project by the Ministry of Defence, highlighting its importance for the region.

## Why it matters The project is a significant infrastructure development for India, aiming to improve connectivity to the Ladakh region. The region's strategic importance and challenging terrain make this project a crucial undertaking. With an estimated cost of Rs 1.31 lakh crore, it will be one of India's most expensive railway projects.

The completion of this project will not only provide a significant boost to the region's economy but also enhance the country's infrastructure capabilities. The project's success will depend on overcoming the challenges posed by the Himalayan terrain, including the construction of 270 km of tunnels.

## What happens next The survey for the project has been completed, and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared. The next steps for the project will involve the allocation of funds and the commencement of construction work. With the project's strategic importance and massive investment, it is expected to be a high-priority undertaking for the Indian government.
