Dr Garg: 5 Neck Pain Signs
Clumsy hands and changed handwriting are just 2 of the 5 surprising signs your neck pain is affecting your spinal cord, warns ortho-spine surgeon Dr Hitesh Garg

Ortho-spine surgeon Dr Hitesh Garg has shared five everyday signs that hint at the neck affecting the spinal cord. According to Dr Garg, neck pain can be a sign of issues with the cervical spine, which can have serious health consequences if left untreated.
One of the early symptoms of a spinal cord issue is increasingly clumsy hands. This can manifest as dropping things and struggling to hold a cup or perform tasks like using keys, fastening buttons, tying shoelaces, or dealing with jewelry. Dr Garg explains that such changes can occur due to the disruption of the nerve signals that control the small movements of the hand.
A noticeable change in handwriting can also be a sign of a spinal cord issue. If handwriting suddenly becomes smaller, messier, or harder to control, it should not always be dismissed as just a sign of getting older. Dr Garg cautions that less finger coordination can make writing more of a mental task and require more effort.
Other signs that neck trouble is affecting the spinal cord include tingling or numbness of the hands, feeling unsteady while walking, and neck stiffness or discomfort. These symptoms can be caused by age-related wear and tear, arthritis, or a bulging disk, which can lead to a condition known as cervical myelopathy.
## Why it matters Cervical myelopathy occurs when the spinal canal narrows and puts pressure on the spinal cord, affecting other parts of the body like hands, arms, and legs. If left untreated, this condition can have serious health consequences. Dr Garg's warnings highlight the importance of paying attention to everyday signs that may indicate a spinal cord issue, rather than dismissing them as normal signs of aging.
The five signs listed by Dr Garg serve as a reminder to take neck pain seriously and seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen over time. By being aware of these signs, individuals can take proactive steps to address potential spinal cord issues and prevent further complications.
