The International Energy Agency (IEA) is set to meet on Wednesday to discuss a proposed release of oil and diesel stocks, amid a surge in diesel prices driven by global events such as the wars in Ukraine and Iran. The meeting will be held at 1300 local time (1100 GMT) on Wednesday.

The Group of 7 countries, which includes the US, UK, Japan, Canada, France, Germany, and Italy, agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel. This move comes after countries committed to an IEA-coordinated 400-million-barrel release of oil and diesel stocks in March.

Germany's economy ministry is working on the approval of the release of energy reserves and will participate in the issuing of volumes already set by the IEA in March. The US President had warned European countries that if they did not release more diesel, the US would ban diesel exports.

The wars in Ukraine and Iran have curtailed exports and damaged refineries, contributing to a rise in diesel prices. The surge in diesel prices has turned the fuel into a global political and economic concern, as it underpins trucking, agriculture, and industry.

## Why it matters The proposed release of oil and diesel stocks is crucial in addressing the surge in diesel prices, which has significant implications for the global economy. The IEA's decision will be closely watched, as it will impact the energy markets and the overall economic stability. The meeting on Wednesday will provide more clarity on the proposed release and its potential impact on the global energy landscape.
