NTT Data is in the final stages of talks to build Anthropic's first data centre in Japan, with construction costs potentially reaching up to 1 trillion yen ($6.3 billion). The data centre, to be located in Osaka, western Japan, would have a power intake capacity of up to 500 megawatts.

The facility is expected to be the first dedicated data centre in Japan for US AI company Anthropic. Partial operations are set to start as early as 2028, with NTT Data and Anthropic aiming to sign an agreement by the end of fiscal 2026, which ends on March 31.

NTT Data and its parent company, NTT Group, have declined to comment on the matter. The construction of the data centre would mark a significant investment in Japan's data centre market.

## Why it matters The construction of the data centre would provide Anthropic with a significant presence in the Japanese market. The data centre would also contribute to the growth of Japan's digital infrastructure, supporting the country's increasing demand for data storage and processing. The investment would also highlight the importance of Japan as a key location for technology companies looking to expand their operations in Asia.

The data centre's power intake capacity of up to 500 megawatts would make it one of the largest in Japan, supporting the country's growing need for data processing and storage. The facility's construction would also create new job opportunities and stimulate local economic growth.

## What happens next NTT Data and Anthropic are expected to sign an agreement by the end of fiscal 2026, paving the way for the construction of the data centre. The start of partial operations in 2028 would mark a significant milestone in the project, with the facility expected to be fully operational in the following years.
