The UK unemployment rate has fallen to 4.7% in the period from June to August, according to the Office for National Statistics. This decrease in unemployment is accompanied by a rise in the number of payrolled employees, which increased by 13,000 to 30.3m between August and September.

The number of job vacancies has also seen a significant change, falling by 21,000 to 691,000 in the three months to September. This is the lowest number of vacancies since 2014.

Average wage growth, including bonuses, has fallen to 3.7% from 3.9%. However, average pay growth, excluding bonuses, rose to 3.7% from 3.6%.

The headline rate of inflation is currently at 3.1%, which is below the average pay growth. This is a concern for Bank of England interest rate setters, who fear that higher-than-expected inflation could lead to higher wage awards and fuel future price rises.

## Why it matters The fall in unemployment and rise in payrolled employees is a positive sign for the UK economy. However, the decrease in job vacancies and the concern over inflation could have implications for the Bank of England's interest rate decisions. The fact that average pay growth remains above the headline rate of inflation will be closely watched by policymakers.

The UK's economic situation will continue to be monitored, especially with the budget scheduled for 28 October. Economists had expected the unemployment rate to rise to 5%, but the actual decrease to 4.7% is a welcome surprise. The situation will be closely watched to see how it develops in the coming months.
