US Lends Vistra $4.2B to Boost Nuclear Power
The loan will be used to uprate at least!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! three of Vistra's four nuclear stations, generating enough electricity to power 3.25 million homes
The U.S. is set to lend Vistra approximately $4.2 billion to expand its nuclear power generation. The loan will be used to boost power output, or 'uprate', at least three of Vistra's four nuclear stations.
Vistra has six reactors at four U.S. plants, generating more than 6.5 gigawatts of electricity. This is enough to power around 3.25 million homes.
The move aims to support growing U.S. power demand, which is increasing for the first time in decades. This growth is driven by various factors, including the expansion of AI data centers, electrification of transportation, and cryptocurrency mining.
The Department of Energy has hundreds of billions of dollars in financing available from its loan office. Energy Secretary Chris Wright will announce the loan on Monday at Vistra's nuclear plant along Lake Erie in Ohio.
## Why it matters The loan is part of a broader effort to increase U.S. nuclear power capacity. President Donald Trump set a goal to quadruple U.S. nuclear power capacity by 2050. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved over 170 uprates since the 1970s, allowing utilities to generate more power from existing reactors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The loan to Vistra is a significant step towards achieving this goal, and it highlights the growing importance of nuclear power in meeting increasing U.S. energy demands.
