AI music companies Udio and GRAI have licensed a portfolio of over 24 patents from Music IP Holdings, a company backed by Universal Music Group, to create and monetize AI-generated music. The patents cover various aspects of AI music, including moderation, watermarking, licensed distribution, and monetization.
The patents were licensed from Music IP Holdings, which was formed out of a strategic partnership with Universal Music Group and Liquidax. Daniel Drolet, the CEO of Music IP Holdings, said the patents are designed to create new opportunities for responsible innovation while giving artists, songwriters, and rightsholders stronger protections and the ability to share in the value their work creates.
Udio CEO Andrew Sanchez stated that the partnership with Music IP Holdings will implement the infrastructure that protects artists and establish the guardrails that ensure AI amplifies human creativity. Ilya Liasun, GRAI's CEO and co-founder, added that the patents make it possible for GRAI to build a social streaming service where music moves between people, and artists are asked, credited, and paid every time their work is used.
