Apple is expanding its Apple Wallet support for digital driver's licenses to four new US states. North Carolina is the latest state to announce the launch of a mobile ID program, with Apple Wallet support to follow in early 2027. Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia are also expected to introduce Apple Wallet IDs, although a timeframe for availability has not been confirmed.

North Carolina residents will be able to set up a digital ID through the NC Wallet app starting in December, with Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet support to follow in early 2027. The NC Wallet app will be available at no extra cost, and residents can apply to participate in a 60-minute feedback session to earn a $50 digital gift card.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) accepts mobile IDs at over 250 airports across the US, including Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Law enforcement officers will also treat mobile IDs as valid identification.

Apple Wallet currently supports digital IDs in 14 states, including Arizona, Maryland, and California. The expansion to new states is expected to make it easier for residents to access and use their digital driver's licenses.

## What it means The introduction of digital driver's licenses in Apple Wallet is part of a broader trend towards mobile IDs and digital services. As more states adopt this technology, it is likely to become increasingly convenient for residents to access and use their identification documents. With the TSA and law enforcement officers accepting mobile IDs, the use of digital driver's licenses is expected to become more widespread.

## Why it matters The expansion of Apple Wallet IDs to new states is significant because it increases the convenience and accessibility of digital driver's licenses. As more states adopt this technology, it is likely to become a standard feature of mobile wallets and digital services. The use of digital driver's licenses also has the potential to improve security and reduce the risk of identity theft.
