Ex-Deloitte Manager Jailed 22 Months
A former IT manager at Deloitte's Hong Kong office has been sentenced to 22 months in prison for stealing 423 laptops worth HK$1.2 million to fund his stock trading addiction, after pleading guilty to the theft

A former Deloitte IT manager, Ho Man-kit, has been jailed for 22 months for stealing 423 laptops worth HK$1.2 million from the company's Hong Kong office. The laptops, which were Lenovo computers, were sold to an electronics recycler between September 2021 and February 2023.
Ho Man-kit, 40, pleaded guilty to a count of theft for misappropriating the laptops. The offence came to light after an IT engineer discovered a shortfall of 399 laptops at Deloitte's office on February 13, 2023.
The stolen laptops were worth a total of HK$1.2 million, which is equivalent to US$153,000. Ho Man-kit was unable to compensate Deloitte for the loss because he had lost all the illegal proceeds through unsuccessful stock trading.
Deputy Judge Minnie Wat Lai-man sentenced Ho Man-kit to 22 months in prison. While imposing the sentence, she noted that Ho Man-kit had abused his employer's trust over a long period. However, she also found reasons to impose a lighter sentence, including Ho's willingness to take responsibility and his difficulties in finding a new job due to mental health issues.
## Why it matters The case highlights the risks of employee theft and the importance of internal controls in preventing such incidents. It also raises questions about the support available to individuals struggling with addiction and mental health issues. In this case, Ho Man-kit's family members played a crucial role in persuading him not to commit suicide after the offence came to light.
The sentence imposed on Ho Man-kit reflects the seriousness of the offence, while also taking into account the mitigating circumstances. The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of abusing trust and the importance of accountability in the workplace.
