Taking a walk immediately after meals is an effective way to prevent post-prandial blood sugar spikes, providing metabolic benefits to individuals both with and without diabetes, according to neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar.
The simple habit forms part of a growing body of medical guidance highlighting how everyday routines—ranging from movement and sleep duration to stress management and diet—shape metabolic health beyond simple calorie counting.
The Hormonal Impact of Sleep and Stress
Short sleep duration directly disrupts appetite-regulating hormones, warns bariatric surgeon and weight loss specialist Dr Neha Shah. Sleeping fewer than six hours per night triggers an increase in the hunger hormone ghrelin while decreasing leptin, which signals fullness. This hormonal shift often leads individuals to consume an additional 300 to 400 calories the following day without realising the cause.
Dr Shah also highlighted that chronic psychological stress contributes directly to physical weight retention. Persistent elevation of cortisol drives the accumulation of visceral fat, particularly around the abdomen. Additionally, under-eating protein contributes to ongoing hunger and the loss of lean muscle mass, while underlying insulin resistance frequently causes the body to store fat regardless of caloric intake.
Daily Habits for Long-Term Health
Broader lifestyle activities also provide measurable metabolic advantages. Physician Dr Mark Hyman noted that regular gardening offers multiple health benefits, especially for older adults. The activity is linked to enhanced cognitive functioning, reduced stress levels, increased vitamin D synthesis from outdoor sun exposure, and a reduced risk of lifestyle conditions such as diabetes.
Dietary composition also plays a crucial role in regulating internal inflammation. Gastroenterologist Dr Palaniappan Manickam stated that consuming a diet rich in high-fibre vegetables nourishes beneficial gut bacteria and works to decrease systemic inflammation across the body through the gut-skin axis.
