India's Independence Day sales saw a significant surge of up to 25%, with several companies reporting strong growth. HMT Watches recorded sales of more than ₹35 lakh in a single day, with customers standing in long queues to buy the watches, stretching over 2.5 km.

Reliance Retail clocked its best Independence Day sales, with more than 20% growth across grocery, electronics, apparel, and its online platform JioMart. Department store chain Lifestyle reported double-digit on-year sales growth, led by higher in-store traffic. Electronics retailer Vijay Sales posted more than 20% growth as volumes grew 5%.

India's ecommerce sector also recorded a 31% year-on-year growth in order volumes during the 2026 Independence Day sale period. The fashion and accessories segment captured the highest share of total order volumes, with apparel emerging as the leading category. The fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) segment stood out as the fastest-growing category, clocking a nearly 100% year-on-year increase.

Online-focused TV manufacturer Super Plastronics sold out inventory across its licensed TV brands - Kodak, Thomson, and Blaupunkt - on both Amazon and Flipkart. The surge in sales was driven by a mix of higher showroom footfall, volume growth, and premiumisation.

## Why it matters The surge in Independence Day sales is a significant boost to India's retail sector, indicating strong consumer demand and sentiment. The growth in sales across various categories, including grocery, electronics, and apparel, suggests that consumers are willing to spend, driving economic growth. The success of HMT Watches, in particular, highlights the continued demand for the brand and the government's efforts to revive the public sector watchmaker.

The strong sales performance of ecommerce platforms like Flipkart and Amazon also underscores the growing importance of online retail in India. As the country's retail sector continues to evolve, the surge in Independence Day sales is a positive indicator of the industry's growth prospects.

## What happens next As the retail sector continues to grow, companies are likely to focus on sustaining the momentum and driving further growth. The government's efforts to revive HMT Watches and other public sector enterprises are also expected to continue, with a focus on restoring the brand's legacy and prestige. With the festive season approaching, retailers are likely to build on the success of Independence Day sales, offering attractive deals and discounts to drive consumer demand.
