Qatar Launches UPI Channel to India
New PosTransfer service allows customers to send money directly to UPI-enabled bank accounts in India with a flat service fee of QAR 15 per transaction

Qatar has launched a new UPI channel for sending money to India, allowing customers to transfer funds directly to UPI-enabled bank accounts in India. The service, called PosTransfer, was launched on August 15 through a collaboration between Qatar Post, India Post, the Universal Postal Union’s Interconnection Platform (UPU-IP), and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL).
Customers can initiate a transfer at participating Qatar Post outlets by providing the recipient’s UPI ID and required identification details. Transfers can range from QAR 10 to QAR 4,000 per transaction, subject to a maximum equivalent of ₹1 lakh. A flat service fee of QAR 15 is charged per transaction.
The recipient must activate the facility for receiving foreign inward remittances through their UPI app. This service provides a remittance channel for the large Indian community in Qatar to send money to families in India, linking Qatar’s postal network with India’s UPI infrastructure.
Sandeep Kumar, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of India in Qatar, welcomed the initiative as a channel for the Indian community to send funds to their families in India. The launch of PosTransfer is significant, given the large number of Indians living in Qatar who regularly send money back home.
## Why it matters The launch of PosTransfer is part of a larger trend of expanding UPI payments beyond India’s borders. UPI has grown into one of the world's biggest real-time payment networks, with over 550 million users and 23.6 billion transactions worth 29.87 trillion rupees in July alone. The service is now available in some form for payments in 11 countries outside India, and the addition of Qatar to this list is a significant milestone.
The PosTransfer service is expected to make it easier and more convenient for Indians in Qatar to send money back home, and could potentially reduce the costs and complexities associated with traditional remittance services. As the Indian government continues to explore ways to expand UPI payments globally, the launch of PosTransfer is an important step in this direction.
