Navi Mumbai Airport Welcomes 1st Foreign Freighter
Hong Kong Air Cargo launches three weekly services, as 13 new freighter routes are set to start by August-end
Navi Mumbai International Airport has welcomed its first foreign freighter cargo, marking a significant expansion of its cargo operations. The airport is rapidly expanding its international cargo network and strengthening connectivity with key markets across Asia, Europe, and West Asia.
The first foreign freighter cargo was operated by Hong Kong Air Cargo, which will operate three weekly services between Hong Kong and Navi Mumbai. The service will use an Airbus A330-200F freighter, carrying about 60 tonnes of import and export shipments. This translates into six weekly cargo air traffic movements.
In addition to Hong Kong Air Cargo, 13 new freighter services are expected to commence operations by the end of August. This includes services from other international airlines, such as Turkish Airlines, which plans to relocate its freighter operations to Navi Mumbai International Airport in August.
The airport's expansion of its cargo operations is part of its wider international cargo ramp-up. Navi Mumbai International Airport launched its first Air India Express international passenger flight to Abu Dhabi on July 15, followed by its inaugural dedicated freighter flight operated by IndiGo Cargo to Sharjah on August 1, carrying 20 tonnes of goods.
## What it means The expansion of Navi Mumbai International Airport's cargo operations is significant, as it will create greater opportunities for exporters, importers, and businesses. The airport is building a seamless, tech-enabled cargo ecosystem, aligned with the National Logistics Policy and Maharashtra Government's Logistics Policy 2024. This will reinforce the airport's role as a strategic logistics and trade gateway for Maharashtra and western India.
The airport is owned by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), a special purpose vehicle in which Adani Group holds 74% stake and the rest 26% is held by the Maharashtra government's city planning agency, CIDCO. With the addition of new freighter services, the airport is poised to become a major cargo hub, connecting key markets across Asia, Europe, and West Asia.
