5 Dead in Louisiana

A Vibrio vulnificus outbreak in Louisiana has killed five people, with nine cases reported this year. All nine cases in Louisiana were linked to wounds exposed to seawater, and all patients had underlying health conditions.

The bacteria has also caused two deaths in Florida, with 14 cases reported in the state. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 5 people who contract Vibrio vulnificus will die from it.

Vibrio vulnificus infections are most commonly contracted between May and October, when ocean water temperatures are warmest. People with preexisting conditions, such as cancer, liver disease, HIV, thalassemia, and those receiving immune-suppression treatments, are most susceptible to serious illness from Vibrio vulnificus.

Symptoms of a Vibrio wound infection can include fever, skin discoloration, drainage or discharge, or pain and swelling around the wound. Health officials are urging beachgoers to take precautions and seek medical care immediately if a wound exposed to brackish or salt water becomes red, swollen, painful, warm or discolored.
